This year's race received its first major boost
when it was selected by Reebok to serve as a stop
on the inaugural Reebok USA Cross Country Grand
Prix. Brad Schlapak, representing the New York
Athletic Club, successfully defended his title
in 23:39 and in the process established a new
meet record for the 8k course. Second place finisher
Abidi Bouazza (23:47), of Westchester Track Club,
finished eight seconds behind Schlapak. In the
women's 5k, Carmen Troncoso, of Nike Texas, dashed
Kathy Franey's hopes of defending her title. With
a time of 16:10, Troncoso finished twelve seconds
ahead of the former Mayor's Cup champion, Kathy
Franey, who took second place in 16:22. Melody
O'Reilly (16:24) followed two seconds later in
third. In the men's team competition, B.A.A. beat
